What is OFC?
OFC is Optical Fiber Cable. OFC network provides a vital communication link and plays an important role in running of trains and other day to day activities. The network forms the backbone of all communications in the railway system ranging from train control operations, inter-zonal/divisional exchange junction connectivity, station to station connectivity, passenger reservation and unreserved ticketing systems, wi-fi facility in stations, etc.It also supports the entire e-booking, voice, data and multimedia services for all types of applications and even the recently launched paperless suburban ticketing systems.

OFC Network |
OFC in Southern Railway
99.99% of Southern Railway routes and all divisions in Southern Railway are covered by OFC network.
Advantages of OFC
- Wide bandwidth resulting in large capacity
- Immunity to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference
- Low transmission loss
- Optical Fiber cable is lighter in weight and hence easier to handle
- Human safety ensured – optical fiber does not carry any electricity
- Signal Security
- Flexibility in system that enables upgradation
- Higher resistance to chemical effects and temperature variation
Application of OFC in Railways
- For data transmission circuits
- For long distance circuits
- For short distance circuits for linking of telephone exchanges
- For control and emergency communication
- Signaling application for fail safe transmission
- Railway owned intranet services
- Centralised monitoring of Integrated Security Systems and other special circuits
- Extension of communication to accident / disaster locations
- Networking of all circuits (data logger, voice logger, passenger amenities at railway stations, etc.)

South Central Railway decided to introduce TCAS in trains. As part of the Make in India project Indian Railway launched TCAS system in Trains. The TCA System developed and giving infrastructural support by Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) Lucknow. Now only the trials of TCAS System was done.
What is TCAS?
TCAS is Train Collision Avoidance System and is also called Automatic Train Protection(ATP)System. Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is meant to provide protection by preventing trains to pass signal at Danger (Red), excessive speed over turnouts / Speed restrictions and to avoid the situation in which more than one trains are on the same track to cause collision, in case operations are not able to control so. It also provides assistance to Loco Pilots by means of real time display of signal aspects in Loco Pilot’s cab. It is based on the determination of location of Trains through distance traversed from RFID tags installed on track and transmission of signalling related information from Stationary Unit such as Station Interlocking.
TCAS TRAIL RUN :-
The trail was took between Lingampalli - Vikarabad - Tandur - Koukuntla Stations on Begumpet - Wadi Section of Secunderabad under South Central Railway zone. The ambitious TCAS project is being further planned for full fledged extended trials in the next few months by undertaking work on required infrastructural inputs including Tower Foundations, Equipment installations etc. The full fledged trials will cover Lingampalli – Vikarabad – Wadi and Vikarabad – Bidar sections to a total length of 250 kms. 40 nominated Locomotives (20 Electrical and 20 Diesel Locomotives) will be put to use for these full fledged trials.
